The Things We Water is a single POV, slow burn romance with a magical setting. Nina has happily taken on the responsibility (and privilege) of raising a puppy, Duncan, who is much more than meets the eye. But as he grows, she worries about her ability to meet his needs and keep him safe. The two travel to a secluded ranch in Colorado, home to magical creatures who want to live their lives in peace, guarded over by her best friend’s cousin, Henri. Putting down roots might be more challenging than Nina and Duncan expected, with so many questions about who they are and what brought them there, but she has a feeling that they’ve finally found home.
As a huge fan of Mariana Zapata, I’m not surprised I loved this one as much as I did. It’s the first book of hers with fantasy/magical/paranormal elements, but it still read very much like her, the same voice, slow burn pacing, sarcastic humor, and found family themes. Nina hasn’t had the easiest life, but she’s had the love of her chosen family, and that’s a love she’s grateful for and more than willing to pay forward. I love her fierce loyalty, and her patience towards earning the trust of the community. I loved Henri’s sense of responsibility and strength and how seriously he takes looking out for everyone. The slow burn was definitely worth it!
